I have around 1 yoe and recently got a new job that will start in a month. According to my new manager, the project I will be placed on already has over 20 developers working on the project trying to build it from the ground up.

I have only added features to existing JavaScript/Python programs and fixed small bugs for my current company. I am quite nervous to be placed on such a big project. Is there any advice as to what I should expect or what I should do to prepare? I technically have 1 yoe but feel as though I know nothing.

If I may ask, what are your non-KBBQ recommendations for Korean food in VA? It is hard to decide as a non-Korean person where to go out of all of the Korean restaurants in Annandale

Odd thing about Accenture is I’ve heard a lot of bad things about Accenture on Reddit, but I know a lot of people who work there and genuinely like it there or at least find it “okay”.

I feel the same as you sometimes. What do you plan on leaving to do instead?

That’s such a great way to put it

Two Sigma lets you take as much swag as you want, I took tons of free tshirts, portable battery chargers and zippered tote bags. I have a Bloomberg umbrella that I keep in my car. I still use these DE Shaw pajama pants that I got from a hackathon. A lot of banks will give out hoodies or a light sweater jacket if you interviewed with them.

I love companies that give out clothing. The only thing I don’t like getting are cheap sunglasses and plastic water bottles.

Can you give an example of a problem you think a junior dev should be able to think through?

Already a dev but can I ask what bootcamp it is? Or what bootcamps you know are good? I know some people who went to bootcamps but thought theirs weren’t helpful at all

Dark wash jeans! I like the look of light wash jeans on others but they never look as flattering on me as dark wash jeans do

Does anyone know if sunscreen loses effectiveness if it is stored in hot conditions? I ordered an Asian sunscreen off Amazon today but when I got the bottle, it felt very very hot.

Can I ask what bootcamp it was or at least what the bootcamp taught? That’s very impressive

Can I ask what made you want to change careers from a nurse to a dev? I have met some people who did the opposite, dev to nursing

How terrifying. I am so glad she was able to trust her instincts and take her father’s advice.

COMMENT Jun 07 '21

Oh I see what you mean, like a very “my children have never done without, our lives are perfect, everything is and always has been in order!” thing. Interesting seeing how so many people were able to pick up on it even though a lot of others like me didn’t sense anything wrong. Lots of informative stuff written as to how they could tell the signs.

I can’t imagine how your father felt when he came to that realization...

It definitely seemed weird to me for sure, but honestly not something that I would see as a huge red flag. I guess I was thinking that she must have an “old school mentality” towards life and raising kids, she probably came from a poor rural area or something. Maybe it’s because my grandparents came from a time and a country where it was common for people to marry early and have lots of kids, despite being in what is considered in the US to be extreme poverty.

Honestly a lot of traditional Asian households all have the mentality of “appreciate what you have, try not to complain if your elders are doing their best, work hard and don’t expect a ‘handout’, a lot of others have it worse”. So I guess I personally don’t see that as a particularly abusive mindset, even if it is unhealthy.

What part of that comment or other comments suggest that the mother was too controlling / potentially abusive? I am genuinely curious, I don’t think the above comment shows anything other than her stating her view on finances and showing that she was very appreciative for her children and the life she had.

Edit: I looked up more info on the parents and yes the kids definitely had a problematic upbringing. Didn’t see that from her comment though, guess some people are better at picking up on these things.

Were there really no signs at all that your former oldest friend was violent beforehand? It is hard to imagine someone who is normally always soft-spoken and gentle could do what he did. Do you think there were any red flags that you and his ex decided to overlook, downplay or forgive?

I have also had moments where I did not listen to a gut instinct and hated myself for it afterwards, so I know how you feel. It is hard to get over the feeling that things could have been so different if only you chose to do differently. But we have to accept that nobody can predict the future and we can only try our best.

I prefer traditional milk tea shops over making my own at home because I haven’t been able to find a recipe that makes milk tea as good as those that are store-bought.
