I considered buying a VW Golf Diesel before the emissions scandal and a big reason why I didn't go through with it is because there's only 7 petrol stations in a 50 mile radius of my house that carry diesel fuel, out of over 150 stations in that radius.

For a little bit there it was a semi-common option on budget models from a few manufacturers, but the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal pretty much completely killed it off as an efficiency option for small cars.
