What's weird to me is that it's laughed at. I know 4th generation Japanese people in the US that don't speak Japanese, but no one thinks it is weird to call themselves Japanese. In Los Angeles, 99% of restaurants have Mexicans back of house, including Michelin starred restaurants, Japanese restaurants, etc. I don't trust any place other than really small mom and pop shops that don't have Mexicans working there.
