There are quite a handful of people in the event who are quite decent with redstone knowledge, which probably includes:
Every Hermitcraft player (except maybe Pearl and Gem)
Ph1lza (he had a lot of farms using redstone back in his hardcore world and SMPLive)
Pete and Jordan (veterans of the game, would have firm grasp of the basics)
Fundy and Tubbo (from what I've heard)
Fruit (trapping videos)
But yeah, other than that, almost everyone else are gonna be completely in the dark.

I really want a redstone game but I swear at least 60% of the event don't know how to build a 2x2 piston door lol.

Yeah, that's why I don't think comparators would be great for a redstone-based game.
However, it is a part of game knowledge, so if implemented, it should belong to a hard puzzle with large rewards, that although can be completed normally, would be significantly faster if you know how comparators and observers work.
Maybe in Sands of Time, there a fifth vault, somewhere deep in the maze, which can be opened not by using keys, but through a redstone combination lock that can only be cracked if you're savvy at redstone.

I really want a redstone game, but I fear that there's not a lot of people in the tournament who even know basic redstone knowledge.
My bet is at least 80% of participants don't even know how comparators work and how pistons can spit out blocks using 1-tick pulses, features that have been in the game for over half a decade.
And don't get me started on quasi-connectivity or observer-based contraptions.
I feel like a better way of doing this is simplify it a little bit. At its core, redstone is a Boolean-based logic system, which forms the basics for modern computer science and engineering.
What do I mean by this? Redstone logic gates! Concepts like AND & OR gates can be replicated using redstone, are easily understandable, and most importantly, can be implemented into logic puzzles in certain games like Grid Runners & Sands of Time (or maybe even its own game??).
People who are familiar with redstone can easily figure things out, while people who can think critically and quickly will also excel in this gamemode.
Personally, I believe that there are a lot of MCC players who are familiar with the basics of redstone. Besides from Hermitcraft players, many longtime players like PeteZahHutt or Ph1lza would probably also do well if such gamemode exists.
Those who wish to "practice" for this gamemode can do so by watching redstone tutorials online, especially Mumbo Jumbo videos about redstone circuits and logic gates. It provides an alternative method to practicing by not telling players to grind something for 24/7. Basically, work smarter, not harder.
TL;DR: a redstone game is certainly in the realms of possibility. However, there needs to be careful implementation so that those lacking in redstone knowledge aren't left confused, while those armed with redstone knowledge can show their strength

Building is a critical skill tree of Minecraft. Being able to recognize when and where to place what blocks is the basics of Minecraft itself.
Team coordination & cooperation is a critical part of almost all MCC games, to the point that it's natural to assume that every MCC game will require either moderate or copious amount of team communication.
Build Mart fills out these two criteria's perfectly.

Kinda related but I remember my dad once said: "the first step to not suck at something is to approach it with a positive attitude."

The only reason there's an uproar is because dream made like one comment on a post about build mart and people went ballistic. Reactionary at its finest.
Needless to say, you shouldn't take any of their opinions seriously

Pete and many others said removing placements is a good riddance
Techno stopped playing in "canon" events because of pressure on his placements
Pearl and TapL didn't even sign up for MCC 17 partly because they feel bad about their placements
Lizzie and KaraCorvus didn't even want to play in "canon" events anymore due to placements and competitiveness
"It has gotten better" YEP

nah don't worry I was referring to the people who suddenly wants build mart removed because dream commented once on another post. Sorry if my previous comment sounds confusing

Probably blue too, since Ph1lza is quite handy with redstone (at least from what I've seen in from his hardcore series and SMPLive)
