now the caveat for my little diatribe. I retired in 2012 from 22 years working DOD and active army. I never ONCE carried until I retired and only then because of the rising fanatical movements to infringe on the freedoms of Americans by far right nut jobs. When I kept seeing shootings, consistent threats by political GOP morons, and an overall dumbing down of American freedoms and those who scream it for only evangelical christians I decided the biggest threat to America was nutty assed batshit Americans.. since then Ive not been proved wrong and carry daily. Since I did shoot competition, the amount of firearms I have is enough to keep one in every room easily. My wife trains with them as do my adult children.

shotguns inherently are not small per se. BUT in the realm of " have functional knowledge of the mechanisms of operation but lack proficiency by practice" shotguns are far "safer" than a handgun simply due to being drastically more difficult to point it at yourself. ( yes there are PLENTY of dumbshits on video looking down barrels, even more in the ground)

Id suggest a semi auto shotgun, since in the moment even hardened combat veterans have fat handed firearms ( nothing is more funny in a tic than seeing a fellow soldier whos been on multiple combat tours behind cover trying to work a charging handle after a winger whipped past thier head)

buckshot as a preferred ammo and some occasional firing of said shotgun because slugs require accuracy and birdshot is piss at range in comparison to good ol buckshot.
