Well, it’s a triggering statement for some people. Triggering in the sense that it reminds people on the deepest level of a painful experience they’ve had in their life, and as a result they emotionally over-react against the source of the trigger (you) because of all the negative feelings that just suddenly came up for them.

You don’t need to worry about it when that happens. It’s not about you, and if you want to maintain a good relationship with that person, all you have to do is when they get upset, ask them HONESTLY AND WITHOUT JUDGEMENT why they have such strong feelings about the topic.

If they’re willing to open up about it, next comes the Most. Important. Part. Shut the fuck up and listen. Listen until they’re done. Listen so well that they KNOW to the bottom of their being that you’re cool with them no matter how they feel about god, or how strong their reaction is. Remember, THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU.
