Tachyons are particles that travel faster than the speed of light and appear as if they are moving backwards through time. The mushroom tip of the image is the leading edge of the field, and the shaft on the end represents the “visible” field the particle may have resided in the past. It’s elongated because it “smears” across space-time as it constantly accelerates well beyond the speed of light, and since we can’t measure anything faster than light, it resides in a larger field that has the vector of the particle as its axis.
