BERLIN, April 9 - Germany’s far-right AfD party topped a major poll for the first time on Wednesday in a sign of growing dissatisfaction with mainstream parties as chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz seeks to seal a coalition government deal.
Support for Merz’s conservative CDU/CSU bloc, which won the February 23 election, fell by five percentage points to 24% while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) gained three points to land on 25%, according to the Ipsos institute’s poll.
The AfD came second in the election, the best performance by a far-right party since World War Two.
Why choose the off-brand when you can get the original fascism for the same one vote?
Especially considering that the conservatives fooled every voter by throwing out basically every fiscal austerity policy they so vehemently defended during the last years, the moment they won the election and now need money to form a functioning goverment.
so why not?
Not sure how to interpret your question.
In case my message wasn’t clear: I think the reason the rightwing extremist AFD has overtaken the conservative CDU in polls is twofold. On one hand the CDU is adopting more extreme rightwing rhetoric and this validates the AFD as ‘the original fascism’. Secondly the CDU opposed new debt based investments for the last four year and campaigned heavily based on this sentiment. Now they approved a plan for up to one TRILLION € of debt to finance defence and infrastructure related projects.
It’s almost like systemic support for genocide leads directly to fascism.
Holy cow!
