They didn’t fortify their borders in trying to avoid pissing off Germany and then they got invaded anyways in 6 hours. Fascists are always pissed off no matter what you do.
I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to secure our border if the USA decided on military invasion.

Not meaning to attack here but there’s an entire page o wikipedia talking about Denmark in World War 2.
They basically tried to not take sides/stay neutral and ended up being invaded by Germany.
