I was real excited to see my deeply conservative city add bike lanes recently, but people just ignore them. They even tried adding little reflector barriers, but people kept running them over.
People vastly over estimate the danger of riding a bike. It’s comparable in lethality to getting on a highway in your car, slightly less lethal in most places, but slightly more dangerous for non lethal injuries, iirc.
Except you would die trying that where I live. But cool it’s good for you!

The sad truth is it’s not a real bikelane unless it’s protected by a barrier.
Like a curb. The ideal bike lane is in-between street parking and the sidewalk.
Lights + a reflective/fluorescent/hi-vis vest go a long way, plus paying close attention in risky spots like where drivers turn
