Trump has his bizarre hold over people that they think is charm but is real narcissistic manipulation, and he’s outspoken which people find appealing, but PP has none of that and is just a faceless interchangeable conservative.
BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.worldto Canada@lemmy.ca•‘We have a lot to offer’: Why Canada may appeal to American physicians2·4 days agoA doctor I worked with in the last few years had moved back from the US to Canada in 2022. He is Canadian by birth but had exclusively worked in the US and I guess wanted to get out of there politically. Well, he didn’t like how health care ran here at all, said OHIP was stingy, thought we did everything wrong and complained all the time, his wife HATED Canada, so last fall he got a job back in the US, and told us November 1st. The day after the election I asked him where he was going, and he told me the state, but said he didn’t know anymore after the election if it was a good idea. But his family had already moved there and he had signed a contract so off he went.
I think criticizing the Ontario government for how they handle health care is totally valid, and I understand the money is much better down there, but honestly to stay out of fascism, not have to chase payments across multiple insurance companies and from patients, the death of Medicaid and Obamacare, and very potentially at this point have your funding for your program killed off altogether under Trump, well why would you choose that? I do understand living in a country that isn’t your way of life is also hard, but the institutions of the US are being dismantled by the Trump government rapidly.
Honestly the simplicity of just billing one place seems much more appealing than more money, and denying care to patients for lack of coverage seems terrible. I don’t know why anyone would want to work under such a system. We’re vastly less than perfect, but that seems like a total headache. But whatever. Learn the hard way I guess.

BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.worldto Canada@lemmy.ca•New Conservative ads aimed at older men show golfers, Harper but no Poilievre16·4 days agoThe federal conservatives really don’t do themselves a lot of favours with that cringe commercial. Also PP taking a page out of the Harper playbook and only answering two questions is what’s going to sink him. You know why people like Doug Ford despite how horrible everything he’s done is? He’s very accessible and communicative and answers questions. No I don’t like DoFo, but PP is just making himself less appealing by the day by not talking to people.
BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.worldto Canada@lemmy.ca•Meet the Corporate Lobbyists Connected to Pierre Poilievre and his Inner-Circle5·4 days agoMy aunt called to tell me that a long time family friend who has ALWAYS voted conservative every time for his 70+ years living in Canada, and is usually very loud about it and watches Fox News every day, has voted for Carney instead. I am not sure why, but I think even Canadian conservatives are not very keen on the idea that we might turn into anything like what the US is going through, and that PP is the pathway to that. I early voted last Friday and the polling station was packed, and I think the fear of Trump is a great motivator.

I would like the NDP to get a new leader. I don’t dislike Jagmeet, but things have not gone well. My kingdom to resurrect Jack Layton.
My tablet decided it was going to send me reminders that my exorbitant phone or cable bill was due, and it took a lot of figuring to turn that shit off. I know when you rob me blind, Bell Canada, you also email me.

My dog makes this whistle noise and also a meow noise when it’s morning and it’s time to start the day, when he’s just happy to be awake and walking.

BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•times you've been called out that stuck with you?2·24 days agoI used to volunteer at a nursing home when I was a teenager, and one of the residents was this spicy old demented lady named Florence. Florence had a real mouth on her, and I would try to charm her, and get nowhere. Once she looked at me and said “you look like you got a mouthful of hot shit”. I got over my intimidation and began to speak more freely, and once when she was trying to hit people with a flyswatter she found, I was trying to talk her into giving it to me, and I said “Florence, don’t you love me anymore?”. And she said “Well I love you, but from a distance”, and whacked me a good one.
BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has anybody here actually succeeded in getting an online conservative/right-winger to reflect and legitimately and long term shift their views left?2·24 days agoI’m getting there with my coworker although I wouldn’t quite call her conservative; she voted for the NDP in Canada where we live as we are both union members and that’s who we vote for, but she loves Trump, but in this crumbling hellscape of the last few months and the tariffs he’s hollering on about on Canada, she doesn’t like that because she can’t cross border shop. She says he’s gone rather loony although she still likes him.
However, she isn’t stupid, and she watches all sorts of news from all over and doesn’t just blindly believe in the cult. The last few days I have explained dark money to her, and how it fuels elections in the US for both parties and how basically the Koch brothers and all the Tanton network groups fund Trump. I gave her some articles to read, and she’s starting to get it. I didn’t put it from the perspective of hating trump, just that she should know how these things are funded for everyone (the Democrats are no stranger to dark money either and just because the groups they funnel it in under sound sunnier and less racist doesn’t make them any less sketchy), and how the political landscape is manipulated that way. I am finding she’s listening to this, and coming away with a better perspective, rather than trying to explain why he’s totally wrong. Dark money is a topic I recommend to everyone to learn about, because these elections in the US are being bought by dark money.
