  • No, weapons are not INHERENTLY evil - as you seem to say - nor they are good, they just are and it so happens that countries need them, either to attack or to defend. Making weapons is not an evil act per se, supplying Russia with them would be a terribly evil thing to do, while supplying Ukraine or simply stockpiling them in the west in preparation for a possible escalation is a very, very good act.

We may go to war with Russia in the future, you need to be very naive to think that’s impossible. It’s not likely but it’s a possibility that we must consider. We are seeing in the past year or two that drones are the new game changers in contemporary battlefields. It’s only because of drones on both sides that nobody is able to make advances on the frontline.

Russia has adapted eventually and is now building a shitload of drones with increasing capabilities. China is doing the same. So is Iran. All of our (collective west) enemies are investing in this, with the aim of being able to hurt us and our allies.

Now how is us developing drones (through private enterprise, as is custom in liberal societies) a bad thing? About bloody time I say.

  • That was exactly my point. Blocking instances because “that way my content can’t be seen there” doesn’t make sense, because it’s trivial to bypass it. Yes, even a screenshot will do the job if nothing else, so why talk about protocols in the first place?

Somebody (maybe you maybe not, can’t check while replying) said that blocking instances was useful so that “my content doesn’t get seen / shared / pushed / etc to people and instances I don’t want”. That doesn’t make sense because of the line above. If you need clarification on who are those people and what are those instances ask them, not me.

I hope I’m somehow conveying my message. If there is a subtlety in the subject that I didn’t catch feel free to help me understand.

  • All words that start with “gif” have a hard g because there is only one: gift. If “gift” had a soft g, then all the words that start with “gif-“ would have a soft g. If it only has one case of application it’s an accident, not a rule.

And again, saying this as somebody who agrees on “gif” having a hard g despite the delirious claims of its inventor.

  • jifts for Christmas

Yes, the time when you eat gingerbread and drink ginormous amounts of gin, if you get the gist

Let’s hang everybody who claims that gif is pronounced jiff, but not because (as you seem to imply) that’s not how “gi” is read in English because nothing is read always like anything ever in English

I don’t need to be constructive because I’m not talking to the show writers or anybody who is responsible for it. I’m in a community of fans, I thought we could just speak our minds about stuff here and say it sucks when it sucks.

Yes I wrote “objectively” because i didn’t just dislike the show out of personal taste, but because the writing is atrocious (ask anybody who knows anything about writing, it’s trite and shallow) and the Star Trek element just is not there. Call the first one subjective, but you can’t argue with the latter.

There are plenty of things about the show I dislike subjectively, and if you want I can write an essay on it - but that was not the point of my comment. The show has traits that are arguably bad regardless of taste. You may personally like to hear the ramblings of a drunk junkie and find plenty of amusement in doing so, and if that is the case then more power to you. But it doesn’t make it good material.

I’ll be honest here, the whole std thing feels rather immature. Yeah of course I thought of the other meaning for the acronym, didn’t think people would be so childish as to consider that. Let’s be real, every acronym in the world is probably also an acronym for something nasty - but you can’t take that burden on yourself every time you type. If you have a hard time believing i was honest then don’t believe it, but the fact that I’m being accused of something so trivial speaks more of the accuser than it does of me.

I didn’t mean to make a pun at stds, it’s baffling that people would interpret it that way. That show is crappy enough to insult itself, why would anyone bother calling it names. It doesn’t need any help being ridicule.

As for your “other acronyms” point: other series are made of multiple words. TOS, TNG, DS9, they’re all acronyms. Discovery is only one word, how are you supposed to call it? D? DSC is not an acronym, if I were to randomly select letters from the name just to save space I’d just call it by its full name.

I realised STD could mean both and decided to go through with it anyway because I thought we were talking between adults but clearly you made up your mind about me long before giving a damn about who I was.
