Managing parents’ anxieties is a major part of being a pediatrician. You don’t suggest things that might scare parents when they are not necessary.

A more standard definition in my tenure in academia is that scientists solve problems because they want to know the answer. Engineers solve problems because they want the problem to be solved.

Engineer just means “problem solver”. Everyone gets paid for solving problems.

Imagine yourself as a doctor. The patient has the plague. You say, “Take this antibiotic. It will go away.” They say, “We prefer quarantine and chicken noodle soup”.

Do you say ok? Or do you admonish them and risk they get angry and do nothing? Or do you say, that is better than nothing. It is their body.

The only ethical behavior for a physician in this situation is to say, “sure, try dietary modifications”.

They were trying to prevent long term brain development issues by resolving the anemia the fastest evidence-based way, but the patient refused expert advice.

I always thought about going to be a farmer. Then I watched some videos from farmers and realized they are also engineers.

A large faction of engineers, especially software-type engineers, have these types of hobbies.

I’m sitting here right beside the heirloom quality (compared to most furniture) coffee table I made in my garage with my nearly complete wood shop.

I make stuff in two ways in my day job. I design something and someone else makes it, or it’s just some idea as software.

Engineers are a type. We’re just wired differently from most other people.

That is what I said. The doctor would only have suggested meds if it were necessary.

You should change your thought process and listen to the experts.

They also would have recommended dietary changes if they actually were applicable. It is this kind of belief that leads to increased harm and is solely the reason why so many children are being harmed and killed by extremely preventable causes.

I’m not accusing you of being someone as heinous as an antivaxxer, but this is the thought process that leads people down that path.

The reason I know about this is the social aspect of trying to get people with endemic iron deficiency to use a supplement. If you’re from the more industrialized would, I’d figure you’d take supplements that, while more expensive, may or may not be more effective.

So, I can’t imagine a workplace where you would share a x-ray/ultrasound/CT/mr/PET, where you’d invite people to see it, and the people who showed up could get you in trouble with HR.

Tell me about it. There were so many more opportunities, but I figured I was being a gentlemen. I was just obtuse.

My wife and I hooked up a bit freshmen year in college and then drifted. She later pursued me. Her explanations about how oblivious I was that she wanted to come over and sleep with me are mind boggling in retrospect.

Nothing would happen. You blink for a fraction of a second.

Also, note that the eyelids of people with darker skin already pass less light than those of people with lighter skin. (That is the purpose of darker skin)

Bobcats and house cats are obligate carnivores. Even if people doubt that you actually ate bobcat, I pretty much guarantee that it would be gross.

Outside of fish, where there are additional trophic levels, there are two reasons that we don’t eat carnivores.

First, there are fewer carnivores. The common figure is that in nature if you want 1 pound of animal, you need 10 pounds of animal food (I’m simplifying). So 100 pounds of herbivore food makes 10 pounds of herbivore which makes 1 pound of carnivore. And if you want to farm an animal it can’t be competing with you for food. It needs to, in general, eat stuff you don’t want to eat. Like grass or table scraps or bugs. We can eat herbivore meat. We love it so much that whenever we showed up, we ate everything to extinction.

Cats are separate. They kinda domesticated themselves because when we started storing grain lots of rodents showed up. They just ate them, doing both of us a favor.

Second, they taste nasty. We’ve got poultry. They eat “bugs” those are more like the plankton type trophic level. When they can catch things like snakes or mice, they go absolutely nuts, but they do so more rarely than obligate carnivores.

Then, there’s pigs. They have a similar enough diet as poultry, but we do feed them meat scraps. I can guess about why this is, but I can’t be as confident as I am about my other statements.

Finally, humans are alleged to taste like pig. Maybe that’s it.
