I have hated few things in this world as much as advertising. It is one of the few industries I feel is beyond saving and produces nothing of value at all levels. I am of the opinion that advertising is like cancer, whenever it is allowed to get a foothold somewhere it will eventually kill the host. For-profit companies can not resist the easy money promised by advertising, so the only way to combat it is not have it to begin with.

I go out of my way to pay for the things I use with money and not attention if at all possible. I will nearly always favor buying from a company that does not get most of their revenue from advertising, even if it means I pay more for the product and it is a less capable product or service.

Lemmy as a platform speaks to me on a philosophical level when it comes to the kinds of technology I use when I have the choice. I like that it is not at the mercy of the need to turn a profit to exist.

I left Windows ~2-3 years ago since I got tired of having to keep up with ways to disable the MS account requirements or disable the ads every time there is a major version upgrade on a platform I use every day.

Guilty or not the state is not letting a little thing like police evidence tampering or innocence get in the way of him paying for the consequences being brought home to that CEO. Truth was publicly spoken to power, and someone has to pay for that in the states eyes.

To be fair the only reason he actually went through with buying Twitter was because he was forced to.

It would be better to not allow Google to have a major stake in the control of the Chromium project itself. Same for Android, force them to spin AOSP off into a nonprofit or sell it to EFF or something and forbid them from having a huge stake in it.

Let them use it for their own products, but remove their financial influence over the underlying software.
