Hello, im searching for a Workspace for a Webbrowser. I want to Connect to a GUI Like Interface where i can run Linux Software. I allready tried kasm. This was not bad but i want the full Desktop experience. Then i installed Guacamole under cloudron this was also OK but a bit slower. Would be cool if you could list me a few more tools and possibilities. Security is also a thing i guess? One funny thing i did started a big-sur docker container with qemunand vnc and connected it with guacamolem bit this was really slow. thanks!
Just curious, why not a full VM accessed through Guacamole? On the other hand, I have never considered a browser based full desktop experience, so I’ll probably also play around with these suggestions 😂
Thats the next thing i gonna try. In my work we have the possibilities to accces windows in browser and its realy fast. i just want the same for linux. my last try was to access docker Container with guacamole. but i vould also try to acces my root server itself with vnc and guacamole. the topic is realy interesting because the diffrent possibilities have different pros and cons.
Webtop is really cool. Full desktop OS in the Browser
Isn’t that just a wrapper to Guacamole that gets you a full container ready to go? Either way, how does it play with GPU acceleration? Can it be hosted on an host without a GPU?
Try it out, it is just a container. I don’t use GPU acceleration :)
Just run old plain Xorg.
Can you elaborate on what you found lacking in kasm? Because afaik, kasm is one of the best solutions for this, giving you a full desktop session inside a docker container.
With my test experience now your 100% right. can i store permanent data in the ubuntu vm there and install my own software permanent?
You want webtop: https://docs.linuxserver.io/images/docker-webtop
But just like with kasm, not all software will work, although I think most will.
About kasm:
Not really. I don’t thing the default kasm images come with sudo or a root password, so you cant “sudo apt” or the like.
If you do create a software image with sudo, them yes, but only for a single session, if you keep it long running. Every time you destroy the session completely it will be reset.
Although, If you need software in your images, it’s better to just build your own docker images for use with kasm, that have everything you want.
Not sure if this would be useful, but my university uses ThinLinc. We can use the desktop and other stuff in the browser.
i will have a look thanks.
I use Mesh central, maybe an overkill for what you need, but…have a look at it.
Interesting idea. I know this tool from work but as desktop client.
