It’s been a while since the last time this was asked, so here goes again: what specific apps do you use Waydroid to run?

Whenever I get the itch to play around with this impressive project, I quickly remember that I can’t think of anything to actually do with it. There’s already a Linux native app for almost everything that isn’t an ad infested game, so I’m curious if anyone has use cases for Waydroid that they can share. I’d love to hear about something cool that I didn’t think of!

I didn’t like any native music player and e book reader available on Linux… So setup waydroid for Symphony and Moon reader And using it on surface pro 6 is quite a nice experience. But I wished they could update to newer Android version.

A13 is comming soon. It’s currently in an open testing phase and the latest images can be found on the sourceforge.

I’ve used it for a fairly niche case. I check out audiobooks from my local library through an app called Libby. There is a “desktop” version, but it’s just a wrapper of the webpage and you cannot do any offline listening. On android the app downloads its data unencrypted and simply tries to hide it in a big folder maze broken up into smaller files. With Waydroid I can download an audiobook and then automate the finding, formatting, and merging of all the files to get a proper audiobook I file I can stream from my home server to my various devices.

      Maybe mitmproxy could help there.

What android version is Waydroid using these days? Last time I checked it was woefully out of date, like Android 11 or something.

I saw someone mention using Android TV in another thread and I think that’s genius. It’s perfect for using a controller and I wanna try it

I don’t use it for every day apps, but for accessing things that are only available as an app:

    • Buying train tickets
    • Booking driving lessons
    • Whatsapp (I use whatsapp web most of the time, so only need waydroid to sign in occasionally)

So you only have WhatsApp in Waydroid without having it on a phone? O:

How does that work without a SIM-card?

When you install whatsapp, if you deny it permission to access your phone number, or if it doesn’t find one, it allows you to enter a phone number manually. It then sends a confirmation text with a code to verify the number, just like any other website.

I used an old (non-smart) phone with a burner sim to receive the confirmation text.

The one thing I’ve been thinking about (but haven’t yet done) is using it for the Insta 360 camera app (an app for editing/exporting videos from 360 panoramic cameras). It’s actually more feature rich than the desktop version, which doesn’t have a linux version in any case, so using it to quickly reframe my videos and export them to something non proprietary would be a whole lot easier…

Maybe I’ll try and get that working today…

Not using it but I’d probably use it for a Lemmy app tbh. The average Lemmy app seems to have way more useful features than the vanilla desktop experience. Other than that, probably just games, although it’s not like the same selection on Android is exactly stellar.

Minecraft bedrock edition. There is a native project called mcpe loader but that does break occasionally because of the way it’s done. The waydroid approach is pretty rock solid.

Question, how’s the performance on Waydroid? I know using something that fully emulates an Android environment tends to get slow on slower (5th gen i3 or celeron equivalents) computers

Games are probably some of the most common use for waydroid. Lots of android games out there. Even discounting gatcha games.

Personally I use it for smart tube next mostly. Some folk use it for banking apps but thats pretty hit or miss. Some devices can only be managed via network on a dedicated app so those work too

So far, the only thing I know for sure that I would consider using it for is to use JoiPlay to play RPG Maker games that I can’t get working with my normal methods but at least on my current computer/distro, I’m having issues with audio crackling.

I might find other apps to use later but for the most part, I just kind of keep android apps to android.

I enjoy playing Teamfight Tactics (Riot/League of legends game). So far I don’t really use waydroid for anything else but this game.
